Featuring Jay Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl Date:10 mrt 2009 From: Coma Noir
Greetings Jay could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Coma Noir?
Hi Ruud! Coma Noir is the project of René Noir (singer) and me, Jay Coma (synths). We're from Koblenz, a city between Cologne and Frankfurt in Germany. It is always hard for me to categorize our music, I'd say it's a mix of electro, dark wave and synth pop.
how and why did you come about starting Coma Noir? what else inspires you to create?
Over the years, I was a member of different gothic/electronic bands and always since then I used to make music just for myself. In january 2007, the idea to seriously work on the Coma Noir Project was born. It took even a little more time for me to know that a singer would be great and after a long search I found René. And now here we are: Coma Noir!
Completely functional und ready for take off! :)
What are your views on the current state of this electro scene in Germany. in terms of creativity and audiences?
I think that creativity is no good friend of the newer german electro scene. In a lot of songs you get just one very, very evil sample and some boring uninspired crap that intends to be the music. Luckily, there are a few exceptions.
How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
The first step is always the hardest - I can't sit down and say: "Let's make a song!" The best ideas are popping up when I expect it at least- while having a shower or cycling to work - I had one idea while I used a toilet at the WGT ... the next step is to store this idea somewhere - the best is to sing it in my mobile, but that's not always possible ... or you feel like an idiot, sitting on a toilet, singing in a mobile ;) I remember the idea of one Song, "Gourmet No. 18" (coming soon! :) ). That one "came to me" around 2002 while I was in a very loud disco. Even though there was no way to store this melody, I still had it in my head the next morning. I guess this is the quality of that particular song, cause many people who hear it once can't get it out of their heads for some days. But unfortunately, this is an exception...
Out of all of your numbers, which number would you say is your favorite number? Why? my favorite are Time Kills Love
"Time Kills Love" is somehow the "missing link" between my last band "The Count" and "Coma Noir". The song was one of our unfinished ones when we split up and I am very glad that Oliver (former singer of The Count) helped me to finish it as "Coma Noir feat. The Count".I guess my favourite one is "She". It's just so sad ...
tell me all about the dark scene of Germany?
Oh, well, that's a long story, but to cut it short: the dark scene in germany is just the same like any scene in Germany - just in black clothes. The only difference is that the dark scene says "we are better, more tolerant, better educated, better looking, more philosophic, blablabla." But that's only some kind of unrealistic wish.
How did you come up with the name of your band,Coma Noir?
Coma Noir is the result of the last names of Jay Coma and René Noir. So, in a way the name is like some "dark" equivalent to the german party band "Klaus & Klaus". The only difference is: they took their first names, we took our last names ... because it's darker ;-)
If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
This is your new favourite band!!!!! :)
Tell us a little bit more about Coma Noir What do you do in your spare time?
We relax and wear funny masks.Just the normal things you do when you are in coma....
What do you think of its intermingling with the electro, Darkwave and EBM scenes?
I guess it's always good to mix different styles to get something new. Perhaps this might help some people to look beyond their own nose and find something new.
How long have you been in the music industry and how has it changed over time?
I started to play in bands around 1995, René started even a few years earlier. I'd say the internet really increased our chances to find new fans. Today it is very easy to spread your songs around the world, get in contact with people who like your music and give interviews to nice people in other countries :) Another thing is the digital revolution in studio technology. Today, software effects and software synths get more and more useful.
Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
By now we are happy about our first demo and the other songs that we have written until now. I guess they'll get recorded later this year, but the first priority is to play live and let the audience feel good. René's dream is to sing on the rock of Loreley for once, brushing his hair and driving the skippers into loss.
How and why did you begin to make music? Why various electronic styles? tell us about your unique style of music and who are your major influences? Where do you typically get your inspiration for numbers?
I think that variation in song styles is important to not make the songs boring. I don't like to go to a concert and think "are they know playing a new song or is it the same they started like 2 hours ago? they all sound the same...". I think that Moby's album "Everything Is Wrong" is perfect in that way - every song is different. This might have inspired me in a way - although we will never get to this point of variety.
