Featuring Ed from Arian 1 Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl | 4 januari 2010 0:04

1- For the first question will be - do you know the netherland?
We have some good friends there, we never been there but is on the list of places to visit in our next tour for this year, I know that the artistic scene is very active so will be so much interesting to be a part soon.

2- Do you follow the electronic music scene, do you have any other favourite bands?
For Shure, we find interesting the following projects: Vnv Nation, Icon of Coil, {:SITD:}, And One, Soman, Die Braut, Psyborgcorp, Decada 2 and FGFC820.

3- Greetings Ed could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Arian 1 Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...give us a more background information?
We started with my brother Cesar Leiva in the midle of 1992, (August aprox.) In the city of Lima ( Peru), we came from other underground project, like dark wave bands and Post-punk garage bands, we decide to create a new project based on more powerful and new sounds, this time, using only keyboards and drum machines, for November the project was almost ready to launch, also we have a friend who helped us a lot bringing the best and new music coming mostrly from Europe region, that guy was Ivo draganac, a very close friend of the band., it is in that time when we decide to name the band "Arian 1" after the French space program and Rocket which meant a great deal of always changing and envolving technology. So, our first presentation was first days of December in a National Charity Crusade ( in miraflores district) was a short show, the next was in april 93 at the new wave club FREECATS (Lince district) supporting the band Ensamble ( a clasic Synth-Pop band from Peru ) and we have great acceptance from the public, the next was a complete show ordered by the owner of that club, the presentation was in May of 1993, a total success, then came more than 14 shows in the year and go on...

4- How did you start to make ,Electro Industrial, and what is Electro Industrial, for you?
Cesar bought 2 clasics synthethizer in middle of `92 a Yamaha SY 55 and Kawai K1 II, the sounds and quality was incredible.... for that time :), we wanted to do many songs only using the first bank of sounds ;-) but step by step Cesar work in new sounds for the band. my work was write all lirycs and sing live, also help doing some drum sequence, all the work was do in the inside sequencer of the Sy-55, ( no PC yet) then bought a Brother PDS-100 sequencer machine, and a Emulator EMAX II, thanks to these gear was more easy to do the work for the next shows. Industrial for us is a point of view, life and a form, we are not happy with our authorities and goverment, of course there is no industrie in our country( if you compare with first world countries) , and these concept was perfect to show the message to the people, a simple and strong transmision trying to said, hey! we need to change many things here.

5- What and who are some of your influences in ,Electro Industrial,?
What : This situation, we are under the power of the machines, the human race live under the power of the technologie and goverment systems! Who? : From the begining we heard great and big bands like Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, front Line A., Skinny Puppy, DAF, And One, A Split-Second, kraftwerk, & Laibach, these bands make a huge influence over our cosmovision and give us a new and some new directions of visual and musical ideas for our project.

6- What are your top ten favorite ,Electro Industrial, Club Songs of all time? Who are you influenced by? What would you consider your favorite cd's?

Headhunters - Front 242
The Bog - Bigod 20
Worlock - Skinny Puppy
Mambo witch - A Split-Second
Ministry - The land of rape and honey
Let your body learn - NitzerEbb
Military Fashion Show - And One
Suffering in Solitude - {:SITD:}
Honour - Vnv Nation
Death enough for Life - Icon of Coil

7- Do you have a favourite track and album?
Headhunters from the album Front by Front. (it is a classic for all times).

8- So tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
I am a drummer from 1984, i love to play any type of percussion gear, from drum to latin and traditional percussions,
in the sequence I always put a lot of march so permit us to orient the song to any dance floor.

9- By the way do you like my questions? tell me what you think about it! ;-)
It`s ok, the more questions, the more the people know about us.

10- What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
In general terms the main idea is to take conciesnes about this land (the world), and very then work on solutions, we live in a planet that is full of big and serious problems, from the top to the bottom of the sociaty, the 99% of the problems comes from HUMANS, just read a book of history of review the top news from the last 100 years, it is a fact that the problem have a solution, but a lot of powerful people didn`t want to take part of the solution or desn`t care at all... this are my main motto... we can live a in better place if we want, just think about it.

11- What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
The name of the band comes from the French space program and rocket Arianne 1 (from ariane Space), was the first name to like us and we find interesting due for the concept of changing and envolving technologie, also Arian means prosperity and silver metal (is an old and uncommon name who has the origin in Greece).
we never change the name of the band.

12- "Evolution" where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell me why this title,Evolution Tell us a few words about the concept of this?
We wanted to use the tittle Evolution due to all walk from 92 to these days in a musical context, if you heard the CD you can find tracks who has a strong Industrial influence and other more electro, the entire album is a journey from 2 decades... by the way, this Album has an outstanding Remix by Patrick Codenys ( Front 242 ) of our track "Detengan las Maquinas". For "Immersion global" we planned to do a USA and Europe tour, this is the first time to do that, we think that is is important because some people know us from the early years and never see us live.

13- When's the new album coming out?
The new album is ready, has 10 new tracks, no remixes this time, in Europe region will be available from last days of March. (please follows our myspace blog`s for more info).

14-How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
Now we have 2 dates in Chile (January), then Peru 3 dates, then USA 2 dates (February) , then Brasil in March (2 dates), Argentina then, and Europe region in May ( 7 dates, including the Netherlands).

15- What do you think of a modern ,Electro Industrial, and about ,Electro Industrial, scene?
It is interesting, i think it is growing since 2004, today we can hear much more music proposal, if we have to say thank you to some tool, this will be to the internet, due the global network we can hear tons of great music doesn`t care where come from.

16- Our usual question - what is,Electro Industrial, for you?
Powerful sounds, body beats, strongs sequences who follow and order and permit in the same way to transmit better our message of change!

17- What was your best live experience so far?
In Trance-Industria Party (San Borja distric, Lima), in the middle of 1996, was really the most perfect show and folks we see in my entire life, was 1 and a half hour show, in 2 parts.

18- Please list the name, age, school, and respective instrument of each band member
Cesar Leiva : Mixing and Live Sound (Peruvian)
Mariano Lopez : Live Keyboards - Graphic Design (Chilean)
Eduardo Leiva : Vocals, Lyrics and Producer. (Peruvian)
....School of life and many years like and old vampire ;-)

19-What are your views on the current state of this ,Electro Industrial, scene in Lima - Peru.in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
Peru has change a lot for good, thanks to the people who believe in this country, who work and live for my country and push everything forward in all areas, Peru in 2009 was the numer 1 country in economy growing "in all Americas", then follow us Brasil.... in music the Electro - Industrial is very limited if you compare with the rock and Latin Pop scene, but we are alive and more strong than ever, we have better clubs to go and Bars and radio stations only to listen this kind of music, there are new and interesting music projects around, not a lot in the last year, but they are working, the audiences has grow up in the last decade, i think like a 20% if you compare with 2008, dont forget that we have internet and due that have less time to listen everything around, in the 90s for example if you receive a CD you listen every track of the disc and if you liked you listened again and again, today the people desnt have many time free to seat down and listen a new Cd, just put the first song, listen 15 sg. and click NEXT, so the new audiences has change in that way, you are lucky if somebody listen your work from the begining to the end. I know that the scene in other countries are Big, like Chile scene for example, i was follow that scene from 1993, (by the way we make a live presentation in 1994 in Santiago) for shure many people from there follow us and for that reason we consider Chile a very special land.

20- you have very nice numbers`.............. tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
The lyrical talk about every real things around us, i dont want to talk about love or the last girldfriend of my best friend :) we said : Hey you! we are in a big trouble, where you think you live? in a wonderful world? no man we live a huge problem inside another more biger than your imagination can process in 10 seconds! In the right moment we will send the next "transmission to our greatest authorities" we cannot rest until we see that we aproach to begin to fix this system of life. ( just listen Immersion global tracks).I create when dreaming, i dream a lot, not wake up hehe, i can remember everything i dreamed, so i remember armonies, notes, drum sequences, etc, when i have the time i do the work in the studio in basic midi notes with a controller, then map with better sounds and when have the base, then begin the work of the lyrics, then map again, then arregments, then mix, and etc etc etc. if the result likes me, continue the work and record the voice, if not i press the delete button and voula :D ...... next project song.

21-What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We think Industrial electro, because the average influence during all albums, in all music genres Post Punk, New Wave and electronic do it his part, also Clasical Music and alternative-experimental.

22-Since the music industry is more open now to purely electronic music has this made things easier for you?
Yes, we see that many underground styles are reach the surface in the last years, thanks to internet many people can hear without direct industrie proposals (using the tradicional channels), i think we need more Serious labels or joint venture between labels so more people can enjoy via International Festival bands from far countries, you know, it is hard to do all by yourselfe.

23-So what are their main influences as a band at the moment?
I think many big bands inspire me for moments during the last years, Vnv Nation are one of them, Icon of coil, a little of Apop and F. 242 of course (like ever).

24-What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the ,Electro Industrial, scene of Lima - Peru?
As an artist i inspiring all the time, i wanted to stay as many hours as can at my personal Studio, but you need to go to work, pay bills and eat, so the time sometimes is a problem, i listen to the music every day, many styles, is good to know what is around you, i think an artist is a person who can transmit his ideas and feelings using tools, somebody who can finish something and converts in a concrete message or thing, can be a letter, book, paint, song or sculpture, you can inspire your complete life, it doesnt matter how much time you take, it matters the result in you and the people you want to reach.

25-Do you think that people from the music press didn't expect you to grow up musically?
I dont know what they think about me and my band, i dont know every guy of the press.... about to grow, there are 360 degress around creation, if you feel happy with your work, it is ok.

26-what is the key to making music from Arian 1 and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
See around, many things happens everyday and every people like us process a bunch of information, at the end of the day you can forget all, like making a mental reset, or write about, or go to bed and dream making music in a better place.... it depends of you...

27-How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-,Electro Industrial, music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
Well, is a problem, because lots of bands do a great job and effort to finish their albums and in a questions of hours many people has 1 copy, this is sad, but in the other hand they listen your work, this is like consolation, one solution is to put booths in concerts and music fest and offer original copies there, or find a serious label who helped to promote their music.

28-If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
We have a myspace site, there you can find some news and listen also a preview of the new work: http://www.myspace.com/arian1
