Featuring Robert |from Hatbrott Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl 17 november 2009 17:35
Thanks Hatbrott Robert that you have found time to give answers to these questions,
For the first question will be - do you know the netherland? Robert could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Hatbrott
Yes i know the Netherlands i have been there once in 1991.
Greetings
Hi there!
Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...was founded in ..... give us a more background information?
Hatbrott is one of my projects and was started in 2008 when i felt the urge to make music with roots in the music i listened to in the early 80's.In the 80's i played in a couple of bands but since the late 80's all my projects inolved only one member. Me :) Hatbrott is a one man band and will stay this way.
How did you start to make EBM and what is EBM for you?
Actually EBM is not my source of influence when i'm writing music.EBM to me is mostly the bands associated with record labels like Play It Again Sam and Nettwerk, to name a few.In other words i have had very limited insight in the EBM scene from 1987-1988 until now.
What and who are some of your influences in EBM?
Even though i at the time i listened to them didn't recognize them as a EBM band, neither later, i have to say D.A.F. is my biggest influence. Some would also mention Ministry circa Twitch (1985-86) and i must agree.
What are your top ten favorite EBM / Industrial Club Songs of all time?
It might sound boring but i will have to pick songs from D.A.F.I really enjoyed tracks like Der Räuber Und Der Prinz,Kebabträume, Sex Unter Wasser and Verschwende Deine Jugend.
Tell one secret about Hatbrott that you have never told to anyone?
No secrets here. And if i told one it will no longer be a secret :)
So tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
My musical roots goes way back to 50 's and 60's. Music was when i was younger a big part of my life. One of my first musical experiences was when i discovered punk music in late 70's. In the very beginning of the 80's i listened to D.A.F, The Human League, Yazoo, Logic System, SPK and early Depeche Mode (who really annoyed me the first time i heard Just Can't Get Enough). Responsible for my taste in music is also the swedish national radio with the radio show called Bommen. Thank to them my musical horizons became wider and i started to listen to Laibach, Einstürzende Neubauten, Big Black, Swans and Foetus. The list could grow very long. Later i started digging in musical history and found out the roots to all this, often heavy, music i was enjoying. I discovered country, blues and soul and what impact those genres have had and are still having on people writing music today.
What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
Well i think all people want the same things in life. To be happy and to have a possibility to have a decent live without thinking too much about what will happen tomorrow. I really don't have a motto but i think we all should stick to respecting other lives as we want them to respect ours.
What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name?
Hatbrott is the name of the project and is the swedish word for hate crime. I'm aware of possibiliity that people may think i encourage hate crimes but that's not an issue... cause i don't :) Actually i think hate crime is a stupid word since no crimes are made out of love, most of the crimes are often related to anger or hatred.
Where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell me why this title "To hell with poverty""First Demo"? 4 tracks Tell us a few words about the concept of this?
The art work of Hatbrott, for both the EP and the album, is a work of a good friend of mine Ivan Antunovic (1/2, UZS, Narrow). From minimal instructions i come up with he creates very simple but powerful statements. To Hell With Poverty, the title for the first EP is taken from the band Gang Of Four who had a song with the same name. Just like they did 30 years ago i want to stress more social awareness among the people.Currently i'm working on a EP with the working title "Death To Disco".
How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album your debut "To hell with poverty" white 9 tracks?
I have send some promo copies out to people i know and think appreciate my music. I'm also looking for live gigs.
What do you think of a modern EBM and about EBM scene?
It seems to me it's a healthy scene with many bands involving both younger and older people.Although i have to say i'm kind of watching this from an outside perspective since i'm very little involved in the scene. But i do have contact with some of the bands.
What are your views on the current state of this electro scene in Zweden .in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
Sweden is way back well known for contributions to the electro scene. Even if i think the music was fresh and vital in another way in the first half of the 80's there is still a couple of new swedish bands making me want to dance and shout :) The scene is not big but it has a very devoted audience.
You have very nice album`and many many more tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
The lyrics are often the last part of my music creation. Half way through the process i come up with the lyrics and they are often slogans or statements. I work rarely with the concept verse, chorus, verse, chorus and so on...
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
I'm not so keen on placing my music in a genre. I would state it as electronic music. No more nor less. My major influences are D.A.F, Gang Of Four and Crass if i have to pick the most important ones.
What is the key to making music from Hatbrott and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
The key is that Hatbrott is a way for me to let go of some pressure a man is fronted by turning on the news every day. We live in a very fucked up world.
How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-EBM industrial music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
It is here to stay. I'm a part of un older generation used to fully enjoy a music release. I'm talking about a record, cassette, cd, vinyl... something having a physical shape. MP3's to me are soulless.
Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
As i already said i'm working on a EP and i'm looking for live gigs. I'm also very excited over the fact that i'll be a part of the next summers Familientreffen.
It has been a pleasure to interview you on your musical activity,Well, any last words to your ebm-industrial fans?
Thank for having me, the pleasure was mine. I want to thank all the people out there supporting me in different ways.To you not supporting me...Watch out for the next flu... soon in your home town, at your neighbours place... knocking on your door. Just kidding :)
